Law No 176/2018 on admission in Romania, which entered into force on 18 August 2018, regulates the amount of the allowance for internships – “the amount of the internship allowance determined in accordance with paragraph 1 shall be equal to at least 50 % of the gross minimum basic salary per country guaranteed in the payment and shall be granted in proportion to the number of hours of work”.
Under the current circumstances where the minimum gross wage per country is 2.300 lei, the admission allowance is at least 1.150 lei gross. Following the Government decision no.1.071/2021, published in the Official Gazette no. 950 of October 5, 2021, the minimum gross salary per country will be lei 2.550 as from January 1, 2022, which also entails the corresponding increase of the internship allowance. The young people who are going to receive admission programs will receive an increased allowance as of January 1, 2022, according to the increase of the minimum gross wage which will be lei 2.550 as of January 1, 2022.
The law stipulates that “the failure of the host organization to pay the internship allowance under the conditions regulated by the law is punishable by a fine ranging from 2.000 to 4.000 lei”. The failure to sign the internship contract before the start of the activity is punishable by a fine ranging from 10.000 to 20.000 lei.
