English for business. Test it and certify it!

Today the English language has become an indispensable way of communication in business. And more, the most of us, those that activate in various areas related to business environment, claim that we speak English.

But how many times we asked ourselves if the English we are talking day by day is appropriate to the business environment, or rather is an academic English more appropriate to the academic environment in which we grow?

In this respect, there is now the possibility to assess our ability to communicate in English, or to test the English knowledge of our employees, using a method very known at the international level – the TOEIC test.

Ascent Group in partnership with Zip International brought in Romania the TOEIC test starting with 28 January 2009, test that allows testing the knowledge of English of those working in international environments.

The test is developed by ETS – Educational Testing Services USA, the same company which manages the TOEFL test – Test of English as a Foreign Language, used in particular in education, as a condition of access to higher education institutions.

TOEIC is assessing anyone English linguistic competence as is used in everyday activities.

TOEIC has become the most used tool for assessment the English communication (read / spoken), being used in the working environment by over 4 000 companies worldwide. Over 1 500 000 people are TOEIC tested each year.

This test can be used by small or multinationals companies, by governmental agencies operating in different industries and specific departments.

TOEIC can be applied:

• when is necessary internal or external recruitment of persons with a certain level of English knowledge
• in advancement situations from a position that does not require knowledge of English or are required only at a medium level on a position that requires advanced knowledge,
• when it is necessary to determine the level of English knowledge of a group of participants in a training, course or a program run in English language,
• as a reward
• to all those who wish to test the level of general English knowledge.

In addition, this test can be used by language schools or universities as a condition for admission to certain courses (e.g. TOEIC is recognized as one of the admission tests for MBA)

The TOEIC objective is the assessing of knowledge level of those working or will work with English language in the professional environment. For this reason, TOEIC is not measuring the achieving of the maximum score through the resulst as “accepted” / “rejected” but is measuring the level of knowledge – which is why this test can not be failed.

Each company, using the TOEIC scales and their interpretations, may set a standard for the employee to reach by obtaining a minimum score for the TOEIC test în order to be employed on a position that require a certain level of English knowledge.

TOEIC is characterized by:

• Flexibility – may be applied once a month to check the continuously development and learning of the tested person
• Professional vocabulary, using formal terms that help to increase the quality of communication (based on the relationship: client – supplier coparteneri, etc.) mostly encountered in large companies
• Short paragraphs for a clear, transparent and easier communication
• Reasonable cost (90 euros)
