From the 1st of January 2009, the minimum gross wage guaranteed will be 600 lei per month representing 3,529 lei/hour, according to the draft resolution prepared by the Ministry of Labour. According to the same draft resolution, the employment of the personnel with minimum salaries below those specified in the Government decision will constitute contravention and will be penalize with fines from 1,000 to 2,000 lei.

Currently, the minimum wage is 500 lei applicable starting with January 2008, according to GD no. 1507/2007. The same document stipulates the increase of the minimum wage at 540 lei, from the 1st of July 2008, but this growth was conditioned by the achievement of the key economic indicators based on which the state budget for the year 2008 is built, respectively the growth of the gross domestic product, the inflation target, and also the level of labour productivity.
